I hope you survived the holidays and are starting the New Year with a positive mindset 🙂
Like many people, you’ve probably started to think about what you’d like to achieve or change in the coming year.
This could include any variety of aspects of your life, such as losing weight, exercising more, learning a new skill, joining a club, spending more time with your spouse or kids, etc.
But before you start establishing your goals and making any definite plans, I have some information I’d like to share with you…
Have you ever heard the expression “start with WHY” before?
Essentially, this concept means that before deciding what you want to achieve or attain, you should first figure out WHY you’d like to achieve/attain it.
I.E. what impact would reaching your goal(s) have on your life? (It’s also a very popular book by Simon Sinek… I haven’t read it because I feel like the concept makes sense, but maybe I should pick it up someday…)
Anyhow, the 3 questions I think you should ask yourself are similar to the “start with why” concept, but I think they’re a little more specific and helpful.
Here are the 3 Questions:
->> Question #1: Who do you want to be?
->> Question #2: What do you want to do?
->> Question #3: What do you want to have?
I came across these 3 questions in an audio program called “The Science of Success” that one of my friends/clients lent me (thanks, Bruce!).
After explaining the concept behind the 3 questions, there’s an exercise that has you take a sheet of paper and write out your answers to each question for a full 5 minutes.
You start with the first question, write out ALL your ideas for 5 minutes and then stop. You then pick your top 4 answers and keep them as your priorities.
After completing this 5-minute exercise for each of the 3 questions, I had a much more concise view of what I actually wanted.
And the process also helped me understand WHY I wanted these things, as I was able to prioritize the ones that were most congruent with my values in life.
From there, laying out my goals and plans was a much easier process.
In the video below, I’ll explain the concepts a little more in detail, and I’ll also share some examples of what I came up with.
I hope this information helps you get your New Year off in the right direction!
If you’d like to share your thoughts, please leave me a comment below the video over on YouTube 🙂
